Things aren’t built to last anymore.

In today’s world, it’s a familiar frustration that products simply don’t last like they used to. From everyday items to large-scale industrial equipment, the expectation of longevity has steadily declined.

Replacement is often seen as easier than repair, and short-term efficiency is prioritised over long-term performance.

But that isn’t how we’ve ever approached engineering.

At Christy Turner, we’ve been building machinery since 1837, and our philosophy has remained the same: design and manufacture equipment that stands the test of time.

Engineering with Longevity in Mind

Longevity in industrial machinery doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of deliberate decisions made at every stage of design and manufacture.

It means:

  • Using high-quality materials that can withstand continuous operation
  • Engineering components with precision and durability in mind
  • Designing machinery that can be maintained, not replaced
  • Ensuring performance consistency over years not just months

This approach may not follow modern trends, but it delivers something far more valuable, reliability you can depend on.

A Practical Example:

Milling Rolls

A clear example of this philosophy in action is our milling rolls.

Rather than being disposable components, these rolls are designed with a long operational life in mind. However, like any high-performance equipment, they naturally experience wear over time, particularly in the fluting, which is critical for maintaining efficiency and consistent output.

Instead of replacing them, our customers return their rolls to us typically every 6 to 12 months for refurbishment.

Bringing Equipment Back to Life

The refurbishment process is not simply a repair, it’s a restoration. Each set of milling rolls goes through a detailed process to ensure it performs as intended:

  1. Assessment
We begin by evaluating wear patterns, surface condition and performance impact.
  2. Re-grinding and Re-fluting
The rolls are carefully ground to create a new parallel surface and then re-fluted as required restoring their original profile and sharpness.
  3. Precision Finishing
Final finishing ensures uniformity, balance and optimal performance.
  4. Quality Checks
Each roll is checked to confirm it meets the same standards as when it first left our facility.

The result?

Equipment that not only looks like new, but performs like it too.

Build it properly, and it will keep working.

While much of the industry has moved towards shorter product lifecycles, we continue to focus on engineering integrity, long-term performance and practical reliability.

Not everything needs to be replaced.

With the right design, the right materials and the right expertise, industrial equipment can be maintained, restored and relied upon for years to come.

At Christy Turner, that belief is at the heart of everything we do and it’s why our approach to engineering hasn’t changed in nearly two centuries.
